As a school governor, you have a responsibility to ensure that your school and its senior leadership adopt a consistent, whole-school approach to safeguarding based on effective policies, procedures and staff training. You must also be a critical friend to the school, supporting and challenging safeguarding practices to ensure children are kept safe from harm.

This course, written in partnership with industry experts, provides detailed information to help you understand the safeguarding procedures, including the child protection process, that schools must have at the heart of everything they do. It explores how to hold senior leadership accountable for creating an effective safeguarding culture, the policies and practices that must be in place and what Ofsted are looking to see.

This course is written in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education and includes the proposed changes in the 2024 version of the guidance. The final version of KCSIE 2024 will come into force on 1 September 2024.

Course in action

Why take this course?

Many children in the UK suffer from maltreatment. There have been many well-publicised cases of children who have lost their lives to such treatment, which have highlighted missed opportunities and demonstrated the need for effective safeguarding training.

This Safeguarding for Governors course helps school governors understand their strategic leadership responsibilities for safeguarding. It has been written to equip governors with the knowledge to question and challenge the policies and procedures adopted by their school and ensure they are robust and effective. By taking this course, learners will understand the statutory requirements of schools, how to work with their school’s senior leadership to create a safeguarding culture and how to prepare for Ofsted inspections.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. This course is designed for anyone with a strategic safeguarding responsibility who does not deal with individual concerns at an operational level. It is designed to help governors understand the statutory requirements of schools and demonstrate knowledge of the legislation and guidance that underpin safeguarding in schools. It offers governors an understanding of what it means to be a critical friend, supporting and challenging safeguarding policies and procedures to create an effective, whole-school safeguarding culture and ensure children are kept safe from harm.

The course uses ‘governor’ or ‘governing boards’ as umbrella terms, but is suitable for anyone with a governing role, such as academy trustees.
